Study on the effectiveness of intermittent fasting on weight loss in overweight and obese people

Abstract: Objective To explore the effectiveness of intermittent fasting (IF) on weight loss in overweight and obese people, and study the changes of body weight, blood glucose and blood lipids during weight loss period for developing a new method. Methods Totally 54 overweight and obese volunteers were recruited and randomly divided into intermittent fasting group (28 cases for IF group) and control group (26 cases for CT group) by randomized controlled trial from Jul. to Dec.2020. The changes of body weight, blood glucose and blood lipid were compared between the two groups after 20 weeks of intervention and SPSS 17.0 package was used for statistical analysis. Results The levels of body weight, BMI, waist hip circumference, blood glucose and low density lipoprotein cholesterol in IF group were lower than those in CT group. The results of BMI stratified analysis showed that the weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference of overweight and obese groups in the IF group were lower than those before intervention, blood glucose was lower after intervention, and HDL-C in the obese group after intervention was higher than that before intervention. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that there existed a linear relationship between BMI and waist circumference and TG, the multiple correlation coefficient R=0.64. Conclusion In addition to reducing the body weight and BMI of overweight and obese people, intermittent fasting can also reduce blood lipid and blood glucose levels, suggesting that intermittent fasting is an effective weight loss program.
